Tamil Nadu's Reservoir Levels Drop to One-Third Capacity, Raising Water Crisis Fears

Only about 33% of the combined capacity of Tamil Nadu's 15 major irrigation reservoirs is currently filled, down sharply from 92% at the same time last year, prompting concerns of a looming water shortage.

The latest figures released by the state water department show that the aggregate storage across Tamil Nadu's 15 principal irrigation reservoirs now stands at roughly one‑third of their total designed capacity. This marks a steep decline from the same period last year, when the reservoirs collectively held about 92% of their volume.

Such a sharp drop threatens both agricultural and domestic water supplies across the state. Farmers in water‑intensive districts are likely to face reduced irrigation water, while urban utilities may need to impose restrictions on drinking water distribution if the trend continues.

State officials have warned that the northeast monsoon, which typically arrives between October and December, is the only natural relief expected to replenish the depleted reservoirs. They are closely monitoring monsoon forecasts and have urged the public to conserve water while preparations for possible water‑rationing measures are underway.

The water department has also announced that it will activate emergency water‑sharing arrangements with neighboring states if the monsoon fails to deliver adequate rainfall, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
