Delhi woke up to a toxic haze on Deepavali with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 450 in Jahangirpuri, placing the city close to 'severe' pollution levels.
The national capital, Delhi, faced a significant drop in air quality on the occasion of Deepavali, with residents waking up to a thick toxic haze. According to data from the Sameer app, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the city reached levels close to the 'severe' category, indicating hazardous conditions for public health.
Jahangirpuri recorded the highest pollution levels among all monitoring stations in the city, with an AQI of 450. This was followed closely by RK Puram, which registered an AQI of 448. These figures highlight the intense concentration of pollutants in these specific areas during the festival season.
The surge in particulate matter is typically associated with the widespread use of firecrackers and other celebratory activities during Deepavali. The high AQI readings suggest that the air contained significant levels of fine and coarse particles, which can pose serious respiratory risks to sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
