The Indian government has defended its satellite communication licensing process, stating that SpaceX's Starlink was the last applicant to submit its proposal and must strictly adhere to national security requirements.

The Government of India has issued a clarification regarding the licensing process for satellite communication services, addressing concerns about the timeline of applications from global providers. In a statement defending the regulatory framework, officials noted that the process was conducted in accordance with established protocols.

A key point highlighted by the government is that Starlink, the satellite internet service provider by SpaceX, was the last entity to apply for the license. This timing is central to the government's defense of the procedure, suggesting that the application sequence did not disadvantage other contenders or compromise the integrity of the selection process.

Furthermore, the government emphasized that all applicants, including Starlink, are required to meet stringent national security requirements. These norms are non-negotiable and apply uniformly to all foreign and domestic entities seeking to operate satellite communication infrastructure within Indian territory.

The clarification aims to dispel any perceptions of bias in the licensing mechanism, reaffirming that the Department of Telecommunications and the Wireless Planning and Cell (WPC) follow a transparent and rule-based approach to granting such critical licenses.
