West Bengal will audit the qualifications of 110,000 registered doctors over the past 30 years to address a surge in fake credentials, using an external agency for verification.

West Bengal has announced a comprehensive audit of the medical degrees of 110,000 doctors registered over the last three decades. The move comes after a growing number of cases involving forged or falsified qualifications were uncovered by the state medical council. To ensure impartiality, the state will engage an external agency to conduct the verification process.

The audit will cover all doctors who have been licensed in West Bengal since the early 1990s, with a focus on identifying discrepancies in their educational credentials. Officials say the initiative aims to restore public confidence in the medical profession and to prevent unqualified practitioners from operating in the state.

The external agency will review original certificates, cross‑check them with issuing institutions, and report findings to the state health department. Doctors whose degrees are found to be invalid may face suspension or revocation of their registration, according to the council’s guidelines.
