Senator Marco Rubio declined to pose with Russia’s foreign minister at the G20 summit, prompting the cancellation of the planned photo session.
During the ongoing G20 summit, US Senator Marco Rubio chose not to appear in a joint photograph with the Russian foreign minister. His decision led the organizers to scrap the scheduled photo session altogether.
Rubio’s refusal was linked to growing concerns among several G20 members about Russia’s participation at a time when Moscow has intensified its military campaign in Ukraine. Critics argue that allowing a high‑profile photo could be seen as normalising Russia’s actions.
The incident underscores the broader diplomatic friction at the summit, where countries are weighing the implications of Russia’s presence against the need for dialogue on global economic issues.
