India’s largest economies together contribute almost half of the country’s gross domestic product, according to recent data. The top five states—Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh—collectively generate 47.9% of the national GDP.
Recent economic statistics reveal that the five most productive states in India—Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh—together contribute 47.9% of the country’s gross domestic product. This figure underscores the concentration of economic activity in a handful of regions.
The data, compiled by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, shows that Maharashtra alone accounts for over 15% of the national GDP, followed by Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, each contributing around 10%. Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh add another 8% and 5% respectively.
Economists note that such concentration highlights the need for balanced regional development policies. While the top states drive growth, peripheral regions must receive targeted investment to reduce disparities.
The report also points out that the share of the top five states has risen steadily over the past decade, reflecting both industrial expansion and urbanization in these areas.
