The Supreme Court has directed the Rajasthan government to set up a Special Investigation Team within three days to investigate illegal sand mining and pollution in the Lunni, Joajari, and Bandi rivers.

The Supreme Court of India today issued an order directing the Rajasthan government to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) within three days to probe illegal sand mining activities in the Lunni, Joajari and Bandi rivers.

The court has mandated that the SIT be headed by an officer of IGPI rank, ensuring a high level of investigative authority. Rajasthan’s administration is required to comply with the directive and submit a detailed plan for the team’s formation and operations.

Illegal sand mining in these rivers has been linked to severe environmental degradation, including erosion, loss of biodiversity and contamination of water resources. The court’s intervention aims to curb these activities and restore ecological balance.

The SIT will conduct a comprehensive investigation, collect evidence, and recommend actions against offenders. The Rajasthan government is expected to report its progress to the Supreme Court within the stipulated timeframe.
