Criminals in Sri Ganganagar demanded a total of 50 crore rupees from a petrol pump owner and an electronics trader through WhatsApp calls, using the name of Lawrence Bishnoi to intimidate them.
A serious extortion incident has come to light in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, where local business owners were targeted by criminals via digital means. The perpetrators allegedly made WhatsApp video calls to two distinct victims: a petrol pump operator and an electronics trader.
According to the reports, the callers used the name of notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi to instill fear in the victims. Despite the victims not having any known connection to the gang, the threat was sufficient to coerce them into compliance.
The extortionists demanded a sum of 5 crore rupees from each of the two traders, totaling 10 crore rupees. The modus operandi involved direct communication through WhatsApp, bypassing traditional phone calls to maintain anonymity and create a sense of immediacy.
Local police have been alerted to the incident and are examining the digital trails associated with the WhatsApp calls to identify the perpetrators. Authorities are urging business owners in the region to remain vigilant against such cyber-extortion tactics.
