Police in Thane used lathi charges to disperse a crowd protesting the Purnekar murder, resulting in three officers sustaining injuries.

Thane police on Saturday resorted to lathi charges to break up a protest demanding swift action in the high‑profile Purnekar murder case. The demonstration, which had gathered near the police station, turned violent as stone‑throwing and shouting escalated, prompting officers to fire warning shots and deploy batons.

Three constables were reported injured during the clash, with injuries ranging from bruises to minor cuts. The injured personnel were taken to a nearby government hospital for treatment and are expected to recover.

The Purnekar murder, which has drawn widespread attention across Maharashtra, has sparked repeated public outcry. Protesters allege delays in the investigation and have called for a transparent inquiry. Leaders from both the ruling and opposition parties have publicly expressed concern over the incident and urged the authorities to ensure justice.

Police officials stated that the use of force was a last resort after attempts at dialogue failed. They added that additional units have been deployed to maintain law and order in the area, and investigations into the protest are ongoing.
