A six-year study by the National Law Institute University reveals that 154 out of 300 convicted rapists in Madhya Pradesh targeted minors, highlighting the failure of harsher penalties to deter such crimes.

A comprehensive six-year research project conducted by the National Law Institute University (NLIU) has shed light on the persistent issue of sexual violence in India. The study, which focused on the mindset of offenders, indicates that even with the introduction of stringent legal provisions such as life imprisonment and the death penalty, the psychological drivers behind rape have not been effectively addressed.

The research involved in-depth interviews with 300 convicted rapists currently incarcerated in Madhya Pradesh jails. The findings reveal a disturbing trend regarding the victims of these crimes. Out of the 300 individuals interviewed, 154 were found to have targeted minors, accounting for more than half of the sample group.

This data suggests that the severity of the punishment is not a sufficient deterrent for a significant portion of perpetrators, particularly those who prey on vulnerable children. The study underscores the need for a multi-faceted approach that includes psychological intervention and stricter enforcement mechanisms beyond just punitive measures.

The report serves as a critical resource for policymakers and legal experts, emphasizing that legal reforms alone may not be enough to curb the incidence of rape. It highlights the urgent need to understand the root causes of such crimes to develop more effective prevention strategies.
