The National Green Tribunal has mandated that every tree in Rajasthan be geo‑tagged and a city‑wide census be conducted. It will also form a committee to scrutinise proposals to cut more than 25 trees.

The National Green Tribunal (NGTC) has issued a directive that all trees across Rajasthan must be geo‑tagged and a comprehensive tree census carried out in every city and district. The order, issued in Jaipur, aims to create a detailed record of the state’s green cover.

Under the new mandate, every tree will receive a unique geo‑location tag, enabling authorities to monitor its status and manage conservation efforts more effectively. The geo‑tagging initiative is part of a broader push to enhance environmental accountability.

In addition to the tagging requirement, the NGTC has instructed state and local bodies to conduct a full census of trees, compiling data on species, age, and health. This information will feed into future planning and protection measures.

The tribunal will also set up a committee to examine any proposals that seek to cut more than 25 trees in a given area. The committee’s role is to assess the environmental impact and ensure that large‑scale removals are justified and approved through proper channels.
