The Madhya Pradesh government announced that under the Swamitva scheme it will register rural properties valued at Rs 87,000 crore free of charge, covering stamp duty and registration fees of about Rs 9,000 crore.

Madhya Pradesh has unveiled a major step under its Swamitva (ownership) scheme, promising free registration for rural land and house assets across the state. The move targets properties whose combined market value is estimated at Rs 87,000 crore. By shouldering the entire stamp duty and registration cost, the government aims to remove a long‑standing financial barrier for landowners.
The administration has earmarked roughly Rs 9,000 crore to cover these fees, ensuring that beneficiaries will not have to pay any amount at the time of registration. Officials said the funds will be released through the state’s revenue department and applied directly at the sub‑registrar offices.
State officials expect the initiative to formalise a large share of informal land holdings, improve credit access for farmers and boost revenue transparency. The scheme will be rolled out in phases, beginning with districts that have the highest concentration of unregistered rural assets.
