The Karnataka High Court clarified the Enforcement Directorate’s jurisdiction and threw out a graft case filed against a Congress legislator.

The Karnataka High Court on Monday issued a detailed ruling that narrows the scope of the Enforcement Directorate’s investigative powers. The bench emphasized that the agency cannot operate as a "super cop" and must adhere strictly to the provisions of the law governing money‑laundering and foreign exchange offenses.

In the same judgment, the court dismissed the corruption case lodged against a sitting Congress Member of the Legislative Assembly, finding that the allegations did not satisfy the statutory criteria for ED intervention. The decision effectively clears the legislator of the charges pending before the agency.

Legal experts say the verdict could set a precedent for other pending investigations in the state, compelling the ED to seek explicit sanction before proceeding in similar matters. The ruling also underscores the judiciary’s role in checking executive overreach.

A spokesperson for the Congress party welcomed the judgment, describing it as a vindication of democratic safeguards. The Enforcement Directorate has not indicated whether it will appeal the decision.
