The Delhi High Court has ordered the removal of deepfake content and prohibited defendants from using Sanon's likeness for chatbots or merchandise, while protecting legitimate satire and news.

The Delhi High Court has issued a significant ruling regarding the protection of personality rights in the digital age. The bench ordered the immediate takedown of deepfake content involving the personality of Sanon, marking a clear judicial stance against unauthorized digital manipulation of an individual's identity.

In its directions, the Court specifically restrained the defendants from presenting chatbots or voice models as Sanon. Additionally, the use of merchandise similar to the items placed on record during the proceedings has been prohibited to prevent commercial exploitation of the individual's likeness.

However, the judgment carefully balances these restrictions with fundamental rights. The Court expressly clarified that its orders do not restrain legitimate news reporting, reviews, criticism, commentary, satire, parody, caricature, or fan expression. These forms of expression are protected as long as they fall outside the specific prohibited categories of deepfake impersonation and unauthorized commercial use.

This ruling provides a crucial legal framework for distinguishing between unlawful digital impersonation and permissible creative or journalistic expression in India.
