The municipal authorities will implement the ‘Chandni Chowk model’ across Delhi’s markets during Diwali to prevent traffic snarls and crowding.
Delhi’s municipal administration announced that the so‑called “Chandni Chowk model” will be rolled out in major market areas ahead of the Diwali celebrations. The approach, which was previously used to manage footfall and vehicle flow in the historic Chandni Chowk district, will now serve as a template for other commercial zones.
Under the plan, traffic diversions, designated parking zones and staggered market timings are expected to ease congestion for shoppers and traders alike. Officials said the model aims to ensure smooth movement of pedestrians and vehicles while maintaining safety standards during the peak festive period.
The decision comes as Delhi prepares for one of its busiest shopping seasons, with authorities keen to avoid the gridlocks that have plagued previous Diwali weeks. Implementation will be monitored by the city’s traffic police and market committees, who will coordinate on‑ground measures throughout the holiday.
