The Union Cabinet has approved a Rs 40,000-crore project to build eight next-generation corvettes, with GRSE and Goa Shipyard selected as the builders.

The Union Cabinet has given its nod to a significant defence procurement project worth Rs 40,000 crore. The approval covers the construction of eight next-generation corvettes for the Indian Navy, marking a major step in enhancing the country's maritime capabilities.

The contract has been awarded to two prominent public sector undertakings in the shipbuilding sector. Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) have been selected to build these warships. This decision underscores the government's commitment to indigenisation in the defence sector.

These next-generation corvettes are designed to bolster the Indian Navy's presence and operational readiness in the Indian Ocean region. The project aims to replace older vessels and introduce advanced technology into the naval fleet.

The financial magnitude of the project highlights the scale of investment in India's defence infrastructure. By involving domestic shipyards, the initiative also aims to boost the local shipbuilding industry and create employment opportunities in the sector.
