Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced a target to make India and Punjab drug‑free by 2029, while criticizing opposition leader Rahul Gandhi.
Speaking at a press briefing in New Delhi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared that the government aims to achieve a drug‑free status for both India and the state of Punjab by the year 2029. He presented the goal as part of a broader anti‑narcotics strategy that will involve intensified enforcement, rehabilitation programmes and community outreach.
Shah said Punjab, which has been highlighted in recent drug‑related reports, will receive special attention through increased funding for treatment centres and stricter monitoring of supply chains. The minister emphasized that the timeline is realistic, citing ongoing coordination between central agencies and state authorities.
During the same session, Shah turned his remarks toward opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of politicising the drug issue and undermining the government's efforts. He urged the opposition to support the initiative rather than engage in partisan attacks.
The announcement comes as the Ministry of Home Affairs prepares to roll out a series of policy measures, including stricter border controls, enhanced surveillance technology and expanded awareness campaigns in schools and colleges across the country.
